Black History Month is meant to educate, right? Well not in the case of this public elementary school in Indiana which is receiving some backlash after one of its counselors sent a memo that says parents can opt their children out of Black History Month lessons, according to Newsweek.
Can kids of color opt out of white Disney based history/civics classes? Native Americans opt out of any history having to do with European landing or homesteading in the west? We are dumbing down our educational system which was barely functioning before.
Here's how he started the memo:
February is a time for caring and growing for our students. In honor of Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, I will be coming around and teaching lessons related to equity, caring, and understanding differences.
He's not teaching Black History, he's teaching "equity, caring, and understanding differences" in honor of Black History Month.
