The girl I mentor won $27,000. And I found a new hiking partner.

"Is this a big award from University of Washington?" Alexandria asked today. She had nothing to compare it to. "Most low income students get less than half of that from colleges," I replied. "Congratulations!"

So far I have helped her apply for 36-scholarships. Award letters will be mailed in May and June. Meeting twice a week, we are still applying. Fingers crossed.

Finding a new hiking partner

I feel joyful and relieved. At my age, it's hard to find someone fit enough to hike.

Over the years while hiking with Karen, we ran into Barbara on the trail. We stop to chat. I have always liked Barbara. She is kind, friendly and easy-going.

After her husband died, Karen moved to be close to her grandkids last November. Since she left, I have been jogging instead of hiking. It's not safe for me to hike alone.

Yesterday I called potential hiking partners. I keep a list. Turns out...

  1. Sue has memory problems. She is moving into a camper on her daughter and son-in-law's property in Duvall, WA. She will help with her young grandkids. Bye, Sue.

  2. Lewis had knee replacement surgery a week ago. He's out.

Just no. For several years I hiked with Karen and Gro. Gro is critical and controlling. She is an angry person. Gro takes off like a locomotive and doesn't stop. No fun.

  1. Barbara's landline was cancelled like mine. Oh, no. Thank goodness I wrote down her last name. Found Barbara on Face-book and sent her a message. Barbara invited me to join her trio of women friends to hike on Wednesdays. Yay!

Gina and Connie are possibilities. I like hiking twice a week. Will see what I can arrange.

Great news. I was worried there for a while, I mean if you didn’t find a new hiking partner you would just have to put more time into chasing men, and we know how that ends. 😂😂

@Jolanta

Hilarious! Very astute. Am tired of meeting leftovers on dating sites.

@LiterateHiker Yes, I could not even be bothered. If it is meant to happen, it, meanwhile just love the things you do.

Wonderful news about the young lady!! 😉 I enjoy your hiking posts and am glad you connected with some people to hike with.

@Redheadedgammy

It's a relief. During the pandemic, I have been self-isolated. It's hard to meet new people.

I met Gina and Sue during college mentor orientation at the high school. We went around the room introducing ourselves. "I'm a passionate hiker," I said. Afterward they made a beeline for me.

That is awesome. Hike on.
