While I was not required to enter into AmeriCorps VISTA service, I can see the point in the article. And it talks some about what we do as VISTAs.
It should be voluntary. Didn't Obama come up with the idea of free tuition for national service? Or was it Hillary? Anyone remember
I agree wholeheartedly. As a person who served my country in the US Army, I believe that ALL young people should serve our country in some capacity -- military, forest service, Peace Crops, etc - for at least 1 or 2 years. It is a small price to pay for the privilege of living in our nation. For young people just out of high school or college it also provides an opportunity to start growing up away from home. It helped me to mature in every sense.
Yes, compared to the majority of countries in the world, it is a privilege to live here. Being in this country provides all of us privileges and opportunities not available in much of the world. hey are worth paying for with a bit of our time.
To ATCoffey: I salute you sir and wish that we had a damned sight more people like you in our country today. We need more people who understand that we stand on the shoulders of those before us who contributed to giving us the opportunities we have. We OWE them and we OWE our country. It is time to be a patriot, not an egotist.
