So why don't we hear more about this kind of thing in the US?
Is it because we feed off the negative bias yet again?
Is it TV ratings?
How much does universal surveillance have to do with this? I think a lot, we can't get away with shit anymore.
We've replaced good news with kitty clips. We need extremes of everything to be satisfied. I have learned to live happily off the small achievements and happy moments, those are the true mood elevators.
1980s violent crime: down 10X

The states has the largest prison population in the world. more than the authoritarian regimes of russia and china combined. 70 % of inmates are visible minorities but only make up 12 % of population.32 million people have been in ,or are in , prison. a black male has a 50% chance of being incarcerated. wake up america you look bad to me. maybe time to do some house cleaning. in 79 there were 200k prisoners now there are 2 million !!
That's because we started the "war on drugs" in the 70s. It soon became more lucrative than the drug trade. Imagine the profit for private prisons, which have flourished since then, with the additional 1.8 million prisoners.
But wait.... this shallow article tries to define VIOLENT crime as the crime that should concern us. And indeed it's crime and does concern us, but we're looking at the wrong place for crime. Crime has merely shifted from petty violent crime to the much larger online/computer/cyber crime. And It's huge, HUGE, HUGE! Look at online dating scammers taking everything they have from older folks (not your purse, but your lifetime assets); identity crime racking-up endless thefts from a person for years; mortgage crimes making home title-thefts while you sleep; white-collar crime skimming millions from institutions; credit card number thefts.... unlimited! The list is endless and benefits to the thieves, working from their laptops just like respectable people, limitless. No, crime is NOT on the decline.... it's increasing exponentially. And avoiding dark alleys will no longer keep you safe.
