LINK Elon Musk's Twitter bans CNN, NYT, WaPo journalists | CNN Business

Twitter on Thursday evening banned the accounts of several high-profile journalists from the nation’s top news organizations, marking a significant attempt by new owner and self-described free speech absolutist Elon Musk to wield his unilateral authority over the platform to censor the press.

The accounts belonging to CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, The New York Times’ Ryan Mac, The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell and other journalists who have covered Musk aggressively in recent weeks were all abruptly permanently suspended. The account of progressive independent journalist Aaron Rupar was also banned.

Neither Musk nor Twitter responded to CNN’s request for comment and the platform did not formally why the journalists were exiled from the platform.

But, in a series of sporadic tweets, Musk claimed that the journalists had violated his new “doxxing” policy by sharing his “exact real-time” location, amounting to what he described as “assassination coordinates.” None of the banned journalists appeared to have shared Musk’s precise real-time location.

Musk later appeared in a Twitter Spaces, hosted by a BuzzFeed reporter, and reiterated his claim that he had been doxxed. ...

Twitter had previously had its downsides, but ideally it could be a force for good, a platform where truth could be spoken to power. I doubt it will be that ever again. Now Musk’s overwhelming power squelches all. Not only the internet and subserved web, but shouldn’t social media be regulated as public utilities? I’m all for activist government stepping in and knocking heads up to the point of nationalization. If government took over social media corporations (which would feel good IMO…throwing Zuck and Musk on their asses where they belong) then actual first amendment stipulations might hamper the capacity to moderate. I dunno enough about this stuff.

Musk might be another Hitler want to be.

Under Musk, posts can target non-whites, LBGTQ, Jews, Muslims, etc... but not billionaires.

Some context from Jeff Childers.

'The whole thing started after several journalists retweeted somebody following Musk’s car and reporting its location in real time. After journalists published the doxxer’s thread, Musk’s car was attacked by activists who jumped on the hood and tried to get inside.

But the doxxer was wrong. Musk wasn’t in the car. One of his kids was. A nanny was driving.

Musk was furious. So Musk promptly created a new rule about doxxing people, which resulted in a whole bunch of lefty journalists being banned. Normally they love rules, except when rules are applied fairly, or when the rules don’t hurt conservatives somehow. Anyway, the journalists are now fainting from faux outrage and hysterically clutching their pearls, and CNN, former home of the pedo producer, is threatening to rage-quit Twitter.'

I think Musk has the same ideas about free speech as Trump. You are free to agree with them. Period.
