Marty was known for clowning around on stage . . . .
How sad to turn a beautiful song, written by the last reigning queen of Hawaii (Queen Liliuokalani) and sing it beautifully, and with respect, only to end by making a farce of it. Shameful to do such a thing. It's a song to be sung respectfully and solemnly.
The history of Aloha Oe is that Liliuokalani wrote the song after visiting Maunawili Ranch, and while riding home to Honolulu on horseback, she had turned to look at the view of Kaneohe Bay and suddenly saw Colonel James Boyd and a young Maunawili lady. The inspiration for the song came when she saw the two people slowly and affectionately bid each other farewell. Twenty years later, while imprisoned in Iolani Palace, she used this song as a farewell to Hawai'i as Hawai'i lost its independence and became part of the US.
@Julie808 People are often offended by practically ANY type of humor. The crux of the question, should be, was it done with the intent to offend, or was it done with the intent to amuse. I'd be willing to bet, given the propensity of people to be offended by any type of humor, that you have yourself used some form of humor that would have offended someone one, and I know I have. So while I sympathize with your view of the song as being sacrosanct, and had no intent of offending you, I think that it is important that you realize that intent is what is important, and, if you spend enough time learning about Marty Robbins, you will find that he visited Hawaii, loved Hawaii, and from that love of Hawaiian music, which he learned from Hawaiian singers there, he sang those songs, and there was no intent whatsoever to offend anyone . . . . Marty was an outstanding person, in many ways in his life, and was known to have risked his own live to save the life of another person . . . . and when things are bad, humor is what makes life more worthwhile . . . . there are so many situations that are out of our control, at some point, only humor is the way to deal with them. Without humor, where would anyone be?
