She simplifies complex subject matter.

Anymore, this site is just a source of aggravation and disappointment over how stupid and hateful a majority of people are. The other day I kept getting "Bad gateway" errors and was a little relieved with the thought of this site dying. But it didn't. I guess I should just block all the idiots and maybe my experience will improve.

I would miss reading your posts and replies if this site dies, though.

Good to know that the use of Agnostic dot com as my reward for getting my morning work and evening work done isn't an "addiction" according to her definition.

I do deprive myself when I need to stay on task for work, or when visiting with family in real life, which is more important of course, but interacting with strangers is a good substitute when real life isn't possible. Possibly better than being passively entertained by television and other media.

I consider my checking FB every morning to be just part of my daily routine, as that's how I learn about what's going on in my community, traffic alerts and also as an easy way to keep up with family and acquaintances.

I try to check IG once a week or so, but I hate doing so, though it's important to keep some sort of presence on social media for my business. I'm safe from becoming addicted to that, for me it's a chore I hate.

But Agnostic dot com is my reward and I do look forward to finishing my work so I can see if there's anything here that might get the "gray matter" moving in my brain. Sometimes I'm disappointed when there's nothing of interest posted, so that's when I try to post something I hope might be of interest to someone.

I really appreciate that most members contribute a little something to the tapestry that makes this site interesting most days.

Interacting with strangers is something that I regularly do in daily life on the street or in a supermarket waiting in a queue; there are so many situations that present themselves to talk with other human beings.

The word addiction was originally used in such expressions as addicted to social affairs. However, it has since become addicted to substances and that would be fine if it remained within that context, however, it does seem that there is a continual effort to stretch the meaning of the word addiction and apply it to things that people deprive pleasure from and indulge in from time to time or on a regular basis.

Whatever does not cause harm to others or does not affect your life does not need to be categorized as an addiction. Perhaps it is time to scrutinize how the word addiction is used to define the behaviour of others. I wonder how long it will take before we have the complete quasi-medicalization of the English language.

@ASTRALMAX I use the word "addicted" more jokingly than clinically in most cases when talking about my own lifestyle and habits.

It's hard to understand what she is saying. Speech defect? British accent?

Sabine Hossenfelder

Sabine Hossenfelder is a German theoretical physicist, science communicator, author, musician and YouTuber.

Sorry, German with an English accent.

Listen for a while and you’ll get use to her accent. I even detected a bit of Scottish accent. This is a worthwhile video.
