You are correct. They claim the idea here is to prevent fraud and especially Social Security fraud. While I disagree with them initially, the end result will be that way. My entire state is GOP and I have met local government officials who actually believe the election time myth of the big bus pulling up and Mexicans getting off to vote in our elections. Then they get on the bus again and are gone. The entire story is absurd. Your identity is proven in my area or you do not vote. Very simple really.
Real ID is a great idea but if taken to the extreme a person might actually be deported without it. People like my neighbor might argue that they know who they are but those in power are the ones who want to know who you are. Failing to get an ID that proves your identity and has no cost is not a smart move.
