What is this “working out that you speak of?” Lol
Exercising. I recently joined a CrossFit class and determined to get in mad shape, regardless of as the other people there. I’m doing this for my health and the sake of my life.
Since age 24, I have worked out at the gym alone. In addition, I run and hike once or twice per week.
While running, I do rapid-interval training. This builds leg muscles and endurance faster than a steady jog.
Occasionally, I ask a trainer for new weightlifting and abdominal exercises. My gym workout takes about 90 minutes and includes stretching:
Warm Up:
Arms, Chest, Back, Shoulders:
Legs and Butt:
Dumbbells:
Abdominals:
Deep stretching and yoga.
Here's a 15-minute sketch of my back by an artist in July 2016. Age 62.
Damn... that's awesome...
@BucketlistBob, Thank you. Why do you think my workout plan is awesome?
I don't lift heavy amounts of weights like the guys do. Don't want to injure my joints.
I lift weights 2-3 times/week. Plus hiking and running.
@LiterateHiker. Because look at what you made of yourself. I was told long ago that I ought to take up modeling..
I killed myself trying to look like that... yep... you did good. Great work out list!
First class,Even Socrates encouraged fitness.Well done?I'm building back up after an Liver Transplant over three yrs ago.I have to wait till they remove a large Hernia before i can built the Stomach muscles back again.
I was interested to read how many people prefer to work out on their own. Me too. I think that the non religious tend to be more independent.
Working out on your own, you can pace yourself according to your abilities and how you feel that day. I also agree with a few who talk about getting outside and working in the yard. I like a workout that accomplishes something, like mowing the lawn or planting something. Currently I'm digging a ditch around my front porch to install a underground wire fence because I have at least one groundhog who has been digging under there.
By myself..as most people can't seem to keep up with me or stay off their phones lol I'm a personal trainer by the way lol
The best experiences I've had were with small teams of 4 to 6 friends with similar fitness needs and goals. At the time I was a student of Sue Cobb (Jazz Dance) and Michelle Morgan (Ballet). Like many folk I destroyed my knees and feet over the years. Running which for me was practically a drug is no longer an option. My substitution is 9 or 10 miles of brisk walking across the hills of San Francisco with carefully selected foot gear. Normally a few sets of progressive resistance training and swimming with friends were also standard back in the day. If I can network into an age and fitness level appropriate group of interested, motivated friends I would like to resume that regimen. I also hope to fall in with some reasonably sane, sober female bikers (motorcycles) for some exuberant riding through the beautiful California countryside.
I prefer to have the gym to myself. I don't like being around people. That said, my taekwando class is great and I feel more motivated to do better because I have a really good group of people and my masters are caring and supportive and helpful beyond belief. I don't think any other group I'd be half as happy to be a part of. However it's still hard for me because of how self concious I am about my body and my limitations from my disabilities. I get really sad when I watch the black belts because I know I'll never be like them. I'll always look like some drunk mess when I do it lol
I know what you mean there. I almost wanted to cry in CrossFit class the other day and walk out cause everyone else looked so normal working out while I just felt like I was a waste of time, but it was for my own health when I was like the ,” The hell with them ,” lol.
Bleh. Get outside.
Honest answer. Cutting the grass... that's working out.
@BucketlistBob Hike a trail. Climb a rock. Swim in the ocean. The world is an amusement park really.
@CallMeDave that's me wife. She would love to go hiking. I'm all screwed up with arthritis and neuropathy. I also whine a lot too...lol. I just got up to take more medication. Ouch.. dammit..lol.
I was outside for a little less than an hour today under typical Pacific Northwest cloud cover. I'm bright red, now. Sadly, outside and I don't really get along. ?
@memorylikeasieve Now I wonder what humans did before sunblock. Long loose clothing and some kind of hat I guess. Or so much hair a hat isn't needed.
@NotAndrew I told a friend the other day I have never lifted weights and got a surprised reaction.
When I climbed a lot I just climbed a lot. Daily.
Bad weather? We'd climb the engineering building on campus. It was permitted. I did fingertip pull ups on door jambs (this is a big hit at keg parties. I've seen a lot of macho men who can't do one).
I know many people enjoy it, but I have never been inclined to build muscle mass which only purpose was to lift more weights. And we know what happens if one stops.
@NotAndrew, Good for you! I lift weights, hike and run regularly. See my weightlifting workout below.
@NotAndrew I meant the fingertip kind. At a frat party I set a cup of beer on an oversized ledge above a door, did a pull up on it, grabbed the beer with my teeth and chugged it, set the cup down and then lowered. Haha. A "brother" saw the opportunity and made every plebe there try the same thing. More than a few dumped beer down their shirt. ?
I think I know the other benefits of which you speak.
Dave, I am a passionate hiker. In 2017 I set a personal record by hiking 326 miles with 62,200 feet of elevation gain (and loss).
I hike once or twice a week, and run. While running, I do rapid interval training. This builds endurance and leg strength faster than a steady jog.
I workout on my own at the gym
I prefer that by far. But, there was a period of my life when things were getting on top of me and I found that having a personal trainer helped a lot with motivation. I've done group classes but they aren't a favourite.
I get different benefits out of both, as well as working out alone.
Now you did it... I got to say I don't work out or do anything. But I'm thinking that someday I may address my poor attitude about this... and think about it some more.
Have worked out my entire life mostly alone. For my age, I do an intense workout few can tolerate. Am usually ahead of everyone.
By myself. I can't keep up with a class and trainers push when I shouldn't be with my health. I am the only one who can tell when I need to stop.
Neither I’ve been working out longer then you been alive and never used a trainer however I was an RN for 30 years plus but sadly I find many trainers woefully inadequate for the job so chose wisely
