A role in agnosticism for Freud's "oceanic sense"....?
For me it's the joy of wonder, of being, of loving and helping others.
I am, like Freud, one who does not have the "oceanic feeling" that clearly many others do. I don't know that having transcendent feelings is incompatible with critical thinking though -- or vice versa. Scientists and great thinkers like Einstein, Sagan, and even Hawking, have mentioned such "good feels". So sure there's room for an empiricist to experience awe and wonder. Just not to go off the rails over it.
