A couple of neat sphingid caterpillars I found last night. I took my black light flashlight to the Virginia creeper at my parents' house and these are what I've found so far. They have a lot of Virgina creeper around so hopefully these are just the first of many neat discoveries. The first pic is Darapsa myron, the Virgina creeper sphinx or hog sphinx. The second is Sphecodina abbottii, Abbott's sphinx.
Nice shots!
@Insectra I've heard you do your best work in the dark!!! LOL!! Just teasin'!
So do all caterpillars become moths or butterflies, what do they become?
@Insectra Ask a question and get a great answer, thanks.
Good catch!! I am still anxiously awaiting Hemaris thisbe larvae. There have been several adults around lately, Inc one flying around my Kolkwitzia, a possible host plant. I'll keep an eye out on my Honeysuckle, Kolkwitzia and Arrowood for signs of these beauties
