Was she a road kill orphen ?
Yup. The Mom had been hit, and was already decomposing , and rather "ripe". I was just planning to move the body out the road, so it wouldn't be further smashed. As I dragged it by the tail, I found three dead babies underneath, and one dead one in the pouch. But then , as I continued pulling, I noticed movement in the middle of the odiferous muck . Two tiny girl survivors ! They were in pretty bad shape. But they pulled through. With all the extra care required ( meds, diet, and sulphur baths), they were handled alot, and saw me as Mom - so no release.
@evergreen Meds , diet and sulphur baths ? I see a lot of road kill . Is there a season that they have their offspring I wouldn't know what to do if I found live babies . Hate to see them die along with their mom in the middle of the road . Is there a possum rescue site where I could get that info .
@Besalbub Generally, they give birth in the Spring - though here in Florida - there are often later litters. Many wild animals are simply not equipped to deal with our fast vehicles. Unfortunately, opossum habits, and their night wanderings make them especially susceptible . If you're willing to check the road kills, often there are babies in her pouch. First step is to warm them, then try and get some fluids into them. Here's some basic info : [opossumsocietyus.org]
oops! very cute, but i thought that was you, @evergreen
I was sitting on my patio at about 10:00 pm last night. I was a bit surprised as a young opossum waddled towards me. I made a noise and it quickly turned, ran into a chair and then scuttled off, keeping us both safe. Interesting.
A nice visit. But even if it had bumped into you - unless molested, they are highly unlikely to cause any harm at all.
@evergreen It was a young one. I thought it would be better to scare it at a distance than up close. It was just looking for food.
