Whoa! I just found something in my environment that I've never seen before...

I was in the yard, shortly after dark- moving to and from the shop, with a cheap, LED flashlight. (I've collected a handful of them for free, from harbor freight) Something in the grass lit up, like a reflection from my LED lamp- but I realized immediately that it wasn't a reflection... While my light shone at a right angle to the "flash", it was still lit.

It took scanning the yard for this phenomenon, and finding it three separate times before I could get to one, and observe it closely enough to see where the light was coming from- before it stopped flashing.

It was an orangish, tapered, larva-ish thing... It appeared to be the tail end that glowed. It glowed just like a Firefly; but this was a larvae, and not a mature beetle.

I attempted to collect it for a descent photo; but harmed it in the process. I'll work on getting one tomorrow night.

Now... I'm sure that there are those of you who are already well acquainted with various species of glowing worms; but this is the first one I've ever seen. If these things had been present here previously, I would have discovered them years ago.

I studied what I could find of bioluminescent insects, but couldn't find anything that looked like what I saw, exactly.

Yes... That's what it is. Here's one that I collected for a photo, and released.

How have these evaded my knowledge until just now??

Posted by InsectraA cute grey treefrog (Hyla versicolor) that I found in my birch tree, this afternoon. His camouflage was great and I only discovered him when I heard him calling.
