I hear that some Torontonians used to tell American visitors that the vibrations they felt under their feet on Yonge Street came from the Caribou migration in Saskatchewan. Oh, for the good old pre-COVID days.
The claim was totally ridiculous, of course. Everyone knows that the Caribou migrations occur in Alberta.

On at least one occasion it helped defend British North America. In the days leading up to the Battle of Crysler's Farm, Canadian Militia men were asked to spread the word that there were 2,500 British troops in the area. They did this with relish, especially when "interrrogated" by Americans - lots of beer involved -and the Americans believed it. On the day of the battle the Americans saw the 49th in their grey overcoats and assumed they were militia (another piece of American misunderstanding). They also saw the 89th in their red tunics, accurately estimated that they numbered about 600 and conducted the battle piecemeal thinking that another 1900 Brits were waiting in the woods waiting to pounce. Their piecemeal tactics allowed the greatly outnumbered Brit/Can/Aboriginals to whittle them down until they finally gave up.

On a visit to Toronto, I kept hearing bagpipe music in a subway station. Being a devotee of the pipes, I walked all over that subway station, in vain, trying to ascertain the origin. It should have occurred to me that it must have been the reverberations of the Cape Breton Pipes and Drums, warming up!
