Basicallly the problem money. If you look at the Whole Language approach to teaching English which nearly destroyed the understanding of the workings of the English Language. Only about half of the program was taught in schools. Whole language included the study of grammar and spelling but it was too expensive in time and money to implement the program. So basically we got half-language which was sort of a voodoo way of teaching language. "if they read and write they will learn language". "They will absorb grammar and spelling as they read" . Not so much.
Math seems to be taking the same route with the discovery method. You need the basics as well as discovery to become truly Math literate. Discovery might work for 10% of students but the other 90% need both approaches. But it all comes down to time and money and intellectual laziness. But at the same time am extremely doubtful about anything Ontario proud has to say. I am not very proud of splinter group of the Fraser Institute.
Yes, Math is going through the same troubles under the new Discovery Math program as English did under Hooked On Phonics many years ago. You can't just add it up the way you feel it should be added anymore than you can keep encouraging kids to spell it how you think it should be spelled. Math and English are both languages and therefore adhere to certain rules which must be followed if you are going to be able to communicate in these formats.
However, I don't think that the teachers are as obsessed with Sex Education as much as the New Right in Ontario is, Ford is going to try and make points for himself regardless of what is best for the students and he will play to his Xstian base to do it. Let's not get into the false dichotomies that are so popular these days, one issue is not necessarily tied to the other.
I didn't think the Canadian education system would be suffering like this. Hopefully it doesn't come to resemble the United States education system.
Can we trade the Canadian school system for the US one? We are teaching common core for fucks sake! When I was in junior high, they had to put a disclaimer in biology books about evolution. I'll trade ya.
