Today was the release of the Murdered and Missing Indigneous Women report. Canada needs an International Police Force to investigate murders on the Highway of Tears. RCMP efforts have been almost non existant.
As in have police outside of Canada investigate the Highway of tears?? Why would they do that? As in, why would they care to do that? What would they gain from it?
@MsHoliday I am not sure if this is still accurate, but in a criminology/human rights course I took a few years back, the UN's genocide charges can only be applied to cases beyond the Rwanada genocide, so somewhere in the 90s. So that even though the residential schools and 60s scoop were genocidal, the damn convention cannot even be used to punish the Canadian state due to that exception thrown into it. Has it been modified or updated since then? Do you know?
Labels, such as genocide, are helpful when commissioning inquiries or determining budgetary parameters for some kind of societal reparation. In reality.. genocide or no genocide.. indigenous women,as a demographic, have been inordinately disappeared in Canada. Any label gives little comfort to the family and friends of the victims of violence.
Thank you for an intelligent and balanced comment.
Something has GOT to change. Its long past due for this to be smartened up.
I listened to a bit of press conference on Radio-Canada. As soon as I heard the word "genocide", I turned it off. Folks who are unable to use language correctly, do not deserve my time and attention. The fate of MMIWG may be many things. It may be worse than genocide, but is not by any serious definition, genocide.
@MsHoliday Perhaps, but not likely. Here are some definitions: [en.wikipedia.org]
For it to be Genocide there must by a conspiracy or programme organised by a central government or similar group. For instance, when Dylann Roof murdered a bunch a black folks in a church it was not genocide, even though he targeted an identifiable ethno-racial group. There is no evidence that the MMIWG were victims of this kind of conspiracy, rather victims of individual assholes who committed crimes of opportunity. Words matter. Use of emotional, inaccurate terminology simply blunts the message. Does the routine and common murder of sex workers of any gender or ethnic group count as genocide? It does by your definition and if so, why bother differentiating between murder and genocide?
@MsHoliday, @Wangobango3 It certainly is not genocide. See above. When someone starts a press conference with nonsense - the world is flat, the second coming is imminent - I feel no burning need to waste my time.
@MsHoliday My mistake. I thought we were talking about MMIWG. you know, HIghway of Tears, not the long list of other things that you quote. They are all important issues and maybe some are all may be classified under the header of genocide, but they do not happen to be the issue that the inquiry about MMIWG was supposed to be addressing. Why not talk about global warming, anti-vaxxing, right wing populism in this report as well?
@Wangobango3 "...as an Albertans [sic]...!!?? Did you really say that? Do you want to withdraw the comment or continue to demonise an entire Province because someone disagrees with you? You know nothing about me, where I live, where I have lived, where I am from... What breathtaking cheek.
@Druvius In other words, you cannot keep your eye on the ball. If you recall, my initial comment was about the fact that sloppy and emotive language detracts from the value of the message. I would cheerfully discuss "the issue" but only with someone with a reasonable attention span. Your cheap (and inaccurate) ad hominem is noted and confirms my opinion that you really have nothing useful to add to this conversation.
