Hi there. I would be curious to know what folks think about harvest/curing. Thanks.
I see this isnt a current discussion, but I am going stir crazy, more than a little bored, so I thought Id share my harvest and cure procedures for the heck of it. First, procedures vary depending on if it is indoor or outdoor. Processing 300 - 5 lbs plants while contending with the weather is a cray cray endeaver. I use refrigerated shipping containers, kept 60ish degrees, with a dehumidifier set to 50% rh. ventilation and air circulation are key. There are fans on every wall, every 3 feet, the ceiling. A gentle breeze can be felt everywhere..the low temps allow the herb to dry slowly, the dehumidifier and fans keep the drying process going. I use heavy duty plastic trellis rectangles, 4' by 7' hung from the ceiling to hang my herb on. Each hanger hold 5lbs. 1 shipping container holds 100 5lb hangers. Harvesting a big plantation happens in waves. Top colas are removed first, "big leafed" and hung to dry for ten days. The newly opened canopy allows the lower part of the plant more light and air and which will allow the inside to mature more increasing weight, and sugar to this layer.
Indoor I follow similar procedures. I use a 48" by 24" by 7 foot tall cabinet with a dehumidifier and circulating fans. Same netting suspended on hangers. Each cabinet holds 4 to 6 hanging racks.
After 10 days hanging in these cool dark spaces, I trim and place in jars for two week, burping and fluffing 4 times a day
fun fun fun.

you are so fa ahead of me in you abilities and knowledge on this subject. Obviously I have much to learn
@joeandbarb, growing herb, concocting herbal medication and personal care items is a vocation for me. I love it. I only posted the above cuz I was hoping to find folks to talk to...feel free to hit me up for a personal convo anytime you have a question or just wanna know a little more...
How many helpers do you employ , 1500lbs is a lot to handle . More than six plants in a perpetual harvest is work for me and more than I could ever use . Are you in a legal state ?
@Besalbub, I was in a legal state. I was in Oregon. I typically employed 20 people. 1500 pounds is a nice size harvest. This quantity doesnt include the hash, honey oil, edibles, topicals, and various personal care products that I manufactured also. All these things are by products made using leaf, trim, stems, and stump... stump is the pound left behind in the field at the tail end of harvest... It is bud, but it isn't pretty or large in size. From indoor grows, I use what folks call popcorn buds. popcorn buds fit through a sieve with 1/4 mesh...if it falls through it is popcorn and cannot be sold as top cola.
@Besalbub, Do you not do dabs/wax? Hash is my favorite too. My preference is dry ice assist full melt bubble. I keep mine soft by activating the oils so it resembles the finest Moroccan Hashish in texture, but is of of the lightest gold. The first pic is of a brownie. My special Triple Espresso Brownie. I started making them back in the late 80s and early 90s for my friends with AIDS. They called me the Brownie lady! lol Anyway, each one has 3000mg of fully decarboxylated Indica derived thc. You cannot sell or buy items this potent anywhere in United States. Cancer patients, however, can consume upwards of three a day at this strength...We gave up half or more of cannabis' capacity to treat health conditions to gain legalization.
It breaks my heart. The old girl needs to be set free...instead these laws have essentially hogtied and gagged the sweet girls capacity. The flip side... they are coming out with all kinds of cray cray derivatives that are super boosted and made from bizarre chemicals... and those freaky plastic things are legal...go figure. Please forgive the ramble...I am having a rough night and getting to run on helps.
Thank you for peeking in.
@Alchemy I made some dry ice hash about a month ago from jack herrer and it keeps me awake it was very light in color and I couldn't press it into a hard chunk .Also made some bubble which also is very good just like what I used to buy back in the early 70s .Dabs and wax I have never done I have Cannabinoid Hyperemensis syndrome so as of today I have to back off for at least 2 weeks . Hopefully I'll start back with 1/2 a gram / day increasing till it hits me again . I never had it as bad as some do , no vomiting . The espresso brownies sound good enough to keep you awake . Whenever I eat cookies or brownies It's hard to get the dosage right . Be careful 1500 lbs is a lot of work and could carry a stiff sentence .
There's various schools of thought about this topic. What I did:
I would harvest a few main branches at a time. Take them to my trim area.
Strip off the fan leaves, to make the process easier.
Cut the branches of buds off
Trim the buds of the excess sugar leaves (the sugar leaves went to their own process to dry and eventual use in budder, or whatever)
Hang the trimmed branches inside cardboard boxes upside down for a day, somewhere warm but not TOO dry
Get more branches to process, as required until my harvest was complete. (usually all in the same day, as I wasn't a large grower)My grow was 6 plants SCROG every two weeks
Finish trimming/tidying any excess sugar leaves, then cut the buds off, with as little wood as possible (final customers don't like paying for wood)
Put the singular buds on a mesh drying rack spread evenly and thinly.
Check hourly for their condition (that all depends on your ambient conditions
They stay like that until they have started to dry to a certain point, usually overnight
Then I collected them all up and put them into turkey oven bags to bring the moisture out from the inside of the buds.
Twice a day I would open the bags and air them, tossing the buds inside to make sure they all got fresh air, then seal them back up until the next airing
How long that took depended on the strain and how many buds were in the bags, and how dry you wanted the finished product.
If you could bong/vape/joint the product, it's done.
