I had just heard about this painting on the latest Now & Then Podcast. Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freeman were talking about how after having introduced rats to the North American continent it was necessary to introduce cats, or starve. And that there was this early painting of a cat chained to the prow to be sold to a farmer down river…
