Himalaya, with Michael Palin.
I enjoyed this series immensely. I had expected I would do so because of the stunning scenery, but was surprised that what I found most fascinating was in fact the insights into how others live, and how religion has such a deep influence upon them. Religious belief permeates every part of society in the regions he visits, to good or ill effect depending on the beliefs; religious practices are contrasted with those of neighbouring areas, usually with an arch eyebrow and gentle smile from Palin being his only comment on how nutty he finds the behaviour. He's remarkably tolerant and restrained, I don't think I could manage it the way he does!
He truly delights in discovering and immersing himself in different cultures, and a the way I found that I had developed a new field of interest. It's a few years old now, technology has come a way since then; the photography is spectacular, but don't expect to see glorious Full HD panoramas and you won't be disappointed. Recommended, a with his series on the Sahara for the same reasons.
They are all brilliant series.. they only get better over time.. I like Palin.. and his character suits the format.
Excellent..you really know your stuff..brilliant to get the back story... I love Wicker and Clive James..but he took I'll so couldn't have done it anyway...but I'm glad Palin ran with it...Thank you.
