"Dick Cavett's Vietnam" is running on Amazon Prime for free. It shows what the public discourse was in the 1960s and 70s. To me, it shows how the two-party system once again failed us miserably by preventing any semblance of intelligent discussion. Kennedy was goaded into committing troops by Republicans who were calling him soft on communism.
Short of going to war with the Soviet Union, the Pentagon Generals already knew the best that could be achieved was a stalemate.
I am not so kind to JFK....never forget McNamara was the "brains" behind my war with Cardinal Spellman holy crusade for Vietnamese catholics AGAINST Vietnamese Buddhists.....it was a racist war with double the African American in country deaths as a percentage than whites percentage yes Eisenhower signed the liar ass SEATO TREATY but LBJ was obsessed with equal amounts of "guns&butter" war there and "War on Poverty" here...he could never stop the KKK or riots and Nixon pretended to be the peace prez liar like TrumpOLINI 2day
