Today: Old white guy in a MAGA hat watches me hoist my carryon into the overhead rack of the train car. As it settles into place, he stands and offers to help. “No thanks. I’m small but strong,” I say. He leans in and says “I don’t like self-reliant women.” I ignore him and sit across the aisle as his wife chatters about getting off at the Newark station on their way to Jersey City. The asshat leans over the aisle and says conspiratorially to me, “We should have brought a gun for protection.” WTF? Because I’m white you think I’ll agree with your coded language for black residents? I say, “That’s an incredibly racist thing to say. Newark is a lovely city.” Is it wrong to hope a white criminal steals his wallet and goddamn hat? #magamyass
At first I thought you were telling a joke, and admittedly I don't know what a MAGA hat is, but when I discovered that this is actually an anecdotal story about your real-life experience I had to try to put myself into the context. I can assume most of the other passengers on the train were black? Of course, it would be poetic justice to lose his wallet to a white thief, but would they also want the hat?
