I keep hearing now that caffeine is now cool among Mormons, ur, I mean among the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints people. When I was in the Church caffeine was forbidden, including things like Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and caffeine tablets. Now I hear that it is just "hot drinks" which has been interpreted as being hot coffee and hot tea. So, is cold coffee and ice tea OK?

A long time ago, I sat in a priesthood meeting in California wdhen we had a visiter from Utah. Someone memtioned the ban on cola drinks and the visiter just about lost it. In a very loud voice, he claimed there was no problem with caffienated soft drinks. He said Pres. Kimball was asked about coke and pepsi and Kimball responded by saying something like he didn't know why anyone would consume these drinks; they took all the bad things in coffee and tea and put them in cola drinks. The Mormon (sorry, everyone knows who Mormons are and it's a lot shorter to write) faithful took that comment and added it to their list of Word of Wisdom banned substances. I prefer Dr Pepper or Ginger Ale myself, and I could care less what anyone thinks about it.

Sounds like there was quite a discrepancy between what this emotional "someone" said and what President Kimball actually said. This just confuses the issue even more. Dr. Pepper, BTW, has 3.42 mg of caffeine per fluid ounce whereas ginger ale has no caffeine. My problem is that I am too rational to really figure the "Saints" out. Apparently, you just have to have blind faith to be a TBM. But my real question is, even if you are a TBM, how do you figure out how to obey God when there have been so many different interpretations of obedience over the years, including by prophets and GAs? The answer I used to get all the time was to obey the current prophet and ignore what past prophets may have said. Really?? Maybe they should change the name to The Church of Whatever the Current Prophet Said Last.

@Heraclitus - I agree, after leaving and looking back I have to scratch my head and wonder how I managed to accept the contradictions. I think it has something to do with NOT thinking and cognative dissonance. When I finally decided to make the break, I struggled with whether the critical things I had discovered could be trusted. It wasn't until I realized that this wasn't the real issue because I had come to understand that chur h leaders had been dishonest as well covering up scandals both past and present day. The fact that church leaders had lied and couldn't be trusted (while demanding all members believe they were trustworthy) was the real issue, and my decision to leave was set. Btw, I could care less how much caffiene DP or Ginger Ale has. This factor is no longer a concern. ?

Yes a few months ago just before (all wind and piss) Prez Monsoon died, he declared that Caffeine was not the problem with Tea and Coffee, but that it was inadvisable.
HOWEVER Coke a cola was obviously still forbidden to Mormons but Pepsi cola was not.
Why?
Because for some odd reason in 1972 the widow of the CEO of Pepsi cola Joan Crawford, left all of her considerable shares and interests in Pepsi to the LDS (oops) Mor...(er no) Church of Cheese Cripes and Fatter dazed Saints and as far as anyone knows they still have them since the church will not open up its accounts.
So drink Pepsi Brethren.

It's never been officially banned but was unofficially frowned on for many years. The leadership finally came out and said something so now people have something to fall back on.

Same when I was still in the ''moron'' nonsense. Coffee, tea, colas, booze, smoking, etc.
