The reality is that since 2015, several large software companies have refused to give the LDS discounts on their software licenses and invoiced them for the full amount at the renewal date of 2020.
The IRS suspecting cicaneray approached apple to ask them why this was and Apple told them the LDS no longer met their criteria for a humanitarian charity, because of the Nov 2015 policy change on the children of Homosexual couples.
The IRS checked this with other software companies and found that those who did supply the LDS had already withdrawn their discounts and those that didn't had already informed the LDS they would not offer them reduced licences on the grounds of their homophobic policies.
Apparently BYU students were desperately trying to develop their own alternate software before the current licences expire in 2020. but as yet were no where near doing so.
The IRS approached the church and told them that since they take their definition of a humanitarian organisation from popular business practice, if the LDS continued to be refused charitable status by business, they too would have to reconsider the church's exempt status.
