We are living in interesting times, challenging times.
My idea for a tattoo is a snake, wrapped in an S around the trunk of a broken tree (as $ with | thru). All the branches are broken, except for a small one with three leaves. The snake is attacking a man with a pitchfork, who is cornered but fighting.

I'd start with a few words that you want the image to convey and find images and styles that are already out there and work from there.
