Hello, all. I'm still waiting on a decent mic that I ordered but thought I'd post this cover for opinions and feedback. Been practicing since my last post...not as much as I need to but I'm back on it again lol. I'm guessing audio quality will improve with new equipment but would love any feedback, good or bad. Thanks! [soundcloud.com]
I didn't see the link there when I first commented. Now that I've heard it, I have to say you have a really great voice.
@BohoHeathen I'm the same with my music. I'm always still working one it. I don't think I'll ever be totally satisfied.
That's one of the reasons I like playing with others, I always learn something new.
This is the best effort i've heard from you. I like the creative vocal lines and i can tell you've been singing some scales. I can see that spotlight in your future! BTW where did you get the backing track from?
@BohoHeathen There are many sites for backing tracks. Some are free but the pay sites offer better mixes. Do an internet search on backing tracks for vocalists and see which ones work best for your rig. I'm looking forward to hearing your next effort.
As constructive criticism, in addition to agreeing with Wurlitzer's comment about maybe over-using the half-beat pauses, I also feel like it could benefit from a little more variance (dynamics, tempo, etc) over the course of the song. Make it go somewhere musically.
On a technical level, a lot of this song has very open vowel sounds ("oh" and "oo" ) and several times when you hit a prolonged "ee" your voice is noticeably more closed off. It's obviously an inherently more closed vowel, and although I'm sure there are techniques to address this, I don't have a vocal background to know them. My idea would be to avoid the issue altogether by changing the musical phrasing/shaping to avoid or at least lessen the prolonged "ee" sound.
You have such a pretty voice! Great cover! ?
@BohoHeathen You’re welcome!
No worries... you sound great.
If you get into a professional studio, they will take care of those details you are worried about.. lf you want to record yourself and produce it, then you do need some more help there... but you're def. on the right track.. Your style and nuance of how you want to sound will come with experience, and when you understand it, you will get this awesome sense of the ''aah haa'' moment thing you always hear about.. lt really does happen.. trust me.. lol.. lf you ever make your way to NC, let me know, l can introduce you to some great folks in the business..
Cheers.
Beautifully sung, good job! My only editorial note to give some constructive criticism is: those pregnant pauses where you delay half a beat in singing a word are nice for effect, but I think they’d have a greater impact if the device was used less frequently. By all means sing it however you’re feeling it, though! You sound great.
I concur, sometimes the pauses make the vocal sound halting, and tentative. This is a very emotional song, and I feel like it should flow (it would seem more heartfelt). The overall quality, though, is very good-your pitch is good,and the accompaniment is clean, and tastefully done. Timing is a hard thing to nail down, you don't want to be right on the beat every single time (you'll sound like a machine), but then again, you want to feel like you OWN the song. I know this will improve over time, as you get more comfortable.
I agree. Less is more. Don't want to end up Whitney Houston-ing it. Love your voice btw.
