A friend is launching a video production business. He and his partner made this video for my band.
Vocals are a little low in the mix for my tastes. Is that where you want them?
@kensmile4u Yeah there's a few reasons for that. For one, since it was recorded live in a warehouse (the brewery I work at) there was a significant amount of bleed through. There was only so much we could push them up. We wanted to keep everything as close to live as possible, though on this song we did stack an extra vocal track. Also, we all love loud music, and I felt like keeping them a touch low in the mix aids in the perception of the whole thing being loud. Kind of along the thought pattern of Rick Reuben pushing the drums up in the mix to feed the perception of being loud. And when we play live, it's usually on small stages with no monitors, sometimes with a main behind me (vocals) so there's only so much they can turn it up before it feeds back (I know, not ideal/probably dumb but I'm not the one setting up the stage) so lower vocals on the recording keeps it closer to authentic to what we sound like live. It guitarist has been turning down a little live after a few conversations, that's always a fun conversation. Especially since they were a two piece for so long before adding a vocalist haha. But I'm really using the mic more as an instrument in the mix than as a tool to front a band. I'm a front person at work, at shows I just want to take the stage, rock, quick props to the promoters, other bands, and people coming out, and otherwise just do the set and let the next band do theirs. But I do see your point and respect the feedback.
@Tampabrew I've produced a few metalcore bands. Some like vocals low similar to your track (on a studio mix). Others like them up in the mix. That's why I asked. Just a suggestion for the guitarist. Since there is no bass guitar he has room to play with his EQ to make some room for your vocals in the stage mix. I have attached an EQ chart that will help solve your bleeding.
@kensmile4u thanks, man. We've been talking a little about his EQ, more from a standpoint of my hearing loss and I can hear certain frequencies better than others. I'll definately take a look at this chart.
