Hey bass players!!!!! What kind of rig you using?
I've been playing since 1972 and still play my first bass, a 1970 Precision. The hot rod bass that I use regularly is a Pedulla 5-string Thunderbass. I also have a fretless jazz, a Hofner copy, and 5-string Mexican made Fender Jazz that I use if I have to fly to a gig. There are a few others hiding in the closet.
The biggest amp I've used was the Acoustic 370 with 18" cab in the 70's. These days, I'm loving class D technology and the fact that the older I get the lighter the amps are getting! I'm using a GK 500MB (500 watts) through a GK 2x10 cabinet. It's more than enough for the gigs I do.
I’m building up my gear again after having to sell nearly everything. Currently I have a cheap Ibanez sound gear active 4 string. I’m aiming for a Yamaha Attitude 3 to replace the 2 I had to sell.
At the moment I have a TC Electronics TC250 combo. Not sure what I’ll aim for amp wise, but I’ll need two for an Attitude, or an amp with two discrete preamp channels. Mark Bass and Hiwatt do one of those.
We’ll see. Won’t be for a few months yet though.
I am primarily a guitar player but i play several other instruments. I play bass on some songs on stage and in the studio. I use a 3/4 scale 72 Fender Mustang that I usually play through a Hartke 15 inch combo. I also use a mid 70's Fender Precision Bass for Blues and other tracks where more bottom is needed. What rig(s) do you use?
I have a Spector 4string, a Schector 4string, A Tobias 5 string, and a Ibanez acoustic 4 string. I play through an Ampeg SVT 200T and a Mesa Boogie 4-10 cab. I also play guitar, have 6 of them.
That's my Spector in my pic.
@nvrnuff You have good bass gear!
ensmile4u I'm looking to upgrade my rig.
Here are the three basses that I use most often.....The Waterstone hollow body measures 17' across. It's very lightweight, and has a large-ish neck, contributing to the excellent sound The Gibson is an EB-3L, and has an EB-4L pickup.....the pickup has 4 individual coils, one for each string. Best- sounding Gibson bass I have ever heard. The P-bass is a Squire w/Duncan vintage pickups. That's my beater, but I hardly ever use it.
@nvrnuff You can call me Ken. What are you planing to acquire?
Here is the amp rig......On top is a custom built (by Steve Rabe himself) SWR 9-band sweepable EQ. Bandwidth is very narrow, about 1/6th of and octave. Next is a Kern all-tube preamp. Below that is an EV crossover, which feeds the stereo compressor at the bottom. Power is two Crown XLS 2500's. The cabs are Euphonic Audio 12"ers in a transmission line enclosure. I use two up to five cabs depending on the gig. I'm pretty happy with the sound, enough so that I can forget about the technology ad just lose myself in playing the music.
@jasen I've played the Gibson bass in the past. They are badass rumbling thunder. How does that Waterstone respond if you put it's sound board up to your bass rig cabinet turned up loud. Will it feedback any harmonic overtones?
@jasen That is a fire breathing stadium rig. I like the sound of a crown amp. And they are damn dependable. Are you touring with that rig?
@kensmile4u Hey Ken, I'm Richard. In the mid 90's I had a Ampeg SVT II, rack mount, all tube 1000 watt, and played through an Ampeg 8-10 cab. HAd BBE sonic maximizer, dual 31 band EQ. Loved the sound, but had to sell it when I moved here, didn't have room to bring it. Been kicking myself in the ass ever since. Want to have that rig again, but an SVT II amp like that has been impossible to find.
@nvrnuff I found a setup that may be just like that for you. It was played by Steve Stevens with the Atomic Playboys. He later used it to tour with Billy Idol for 18 years. The purchase comes with some of his promotional merch as well. It's located in Los Angeles. Here is a link to his contact info. I hope this works out for you Richard.
@kensmile4u That's the amp I'm looking for. I have found all but the amp.Don't thhink I could drive to Cali to get it and don't know if they'd split the package.
@kensmile4u Thanks for the info, appreciate it.
@kensmile4u I e-mailed them about that rig over a week ago, crickets
