When on a horse forum page, someone asked how my childhood stallions saved my life.
Here's one incident from 1975. I grew up in tropical Haiti, where my American missionary parents built a radio station.
One night, my Haitian mustang stallion, Lightning, and buckskin Akhal Teke throwback mare, La Brujah, managed to secretly hook up, and I got a surprise foal the next summer. The buckskin colt, Suki, inherited his breed's 15 mph broken pace; so smooth, it didn't jiggle the rider.
One day, I was riding Suki out the Cap Haitian city gates, when two heavily loaded camion trucks careened around the corner toward us, racing neck and neck, taking up the entire road.
There was a 15-foot-deep refuse ditch next to the semi-paved road, and I had only a split second before being hit.
Trusting Suki's trust in ME, I touched his neck, and he unhesitatingly leaped 15 feet sideways, tumbling to the bottom of the deep ditch, where he dropped briefly to his knees.
I was riding bareback, so it was easy to lower my feet to the ground, ready to dismount if needed, but almost at once, Suki scrambled to his feet. I slid back onto his back as he rose, and went straight back up the almost vertical side of the ditch and onto the road.
