As a father with a 39 year old daughter with what we now know as Asperger's I feel like I had a ringside seat to the lack of understanding back in the 80's to disorders such as this. She was bullied, teased and made fun of. It broke my heart.
Today she is a professor of English in a state university and is publishing. Most of all she is happy and has friends who accept her for who she is.
43 year old Aspie/HFA woman here. I'm glad she has at least one supportive parent. My father was, but he died when I was 12.
@tymtravler proud dad! There was a definitely a lack of knowledge back then.
I know the feeling. Was heavily bullied in Elementary School myself.
I can only imagine how much more difficult this would be to deal with in the 80s. I'm glad she's doing well now, and I have I can say the same about my son some day.

Posted by MelbatesMy nephew is high functioning autistic. One friend is Asperger's. My "second mom's" grandson is Asperger's. And, another friend is higher functioning autism than my nephew.
