One thing I've noticed, is that many here and elsewhere who have rejected christianity, in theory and practice, have done so though intact epistemological reasoning (a rigorous accounting of how one knows what they know). This reasoning often is either scientific (hypothetically deductive) or quasi-scientific.
Some of those same folks often supplant previously held christian beliefs with esoterica, abandoning their previous epistemological conscientiousnous.
It often seems incongruent.
Maybe being left with out cosmological belief systems is too much for most?

I find some folks go through a period of "Woo" when they are still searching. Either alternate religion or beliefs of some sort.

I myself did something of that sort on my way out of Catholicism but it was half-hearted at best.

Seeking a replacement for a period of time - kind of like quitting smoking or learning to diet - doesn't seem that strange to me.

I did not arrive at Atheism by reading about it - but rather by just disbelieving much of what I had been taught.

Most people seem predisposed to believe in something greater than themselves. It almost doesn't seem to matter what it is. Some scientists argue that this is genetic in nature. Ever hear of the god gene VMAT2?

I suspect you overestimate how many people have arrived at their non-belief by some academic method. I suspect many of us just concluded that it's nonsense. My journey started at the age of 9, and I don't remember ever actually believing, but rather always feeling that I should (from societal pressure), finally rejecting even the notion that I should believe. Sure there was reasoning behind it, but nothing so academic or formal.

Simple science does the trick for me. No facts no religion.

This post has little to do with scientists or science. Can you please repost in a more appropriate group?

The science of bullshit and how ppl buy into it? 😛

science is a branch of epistemology. Many would argue, the main branch

@CreoleTango I think you meant epistemology is a (main) branch of science but I would argue it is actually philosophy. Often, not always, applying critical thinking rather than blind belief is how many here have become non-believers so in other words their reasoning has in fact changed, or if it has not changed they are either still a believer (becoming spiritual) or were never convinced as a believer in the first place.

i meant that epistemology looms larger than science and was discussed commonly by the classical greeks as a introspective method to verify knowlege and was and remains much broader than science. mysticism, religion and a host of other forms of epistemology still exist.
Science, as a specific empirical form of epistemology, emerged 10 centuries later and wasnt refined into what we know know now until the enlightenment
