A great observation by Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson on journalism on, or about Science.
One of the things that irks me most is misinformation, or at least information bias by a journalist who doesn't clearly understand the Science they are reporting.
My biggest problem with that, is that there are an overwhelming abundance of people that read many of these articles, and re-post it as fact, and like a rolling snowball, it gathers mass to a point that most can't tell real Science, from opinion.
journalism
I've seen NDT spew out speculation as if it were a fact on more than one occasion.. Mostly involving the multiverse.
Scientific journalism is the worst though. The authors usually fill it with a bunch of bullshit to get viewers. They might take a study where a new drug killed one cancer cell out of 100 experiments and write an article that states this new drug cures all cancers.
That's why I stay away from "scientific" articles or at the very least, chase down the source. More than half the articles that I've sourced are nowhere near reporting the truth of the research.
I've seen him do that as well on occasion, (he's not the only one). But, I've also in an interview later, where he corrected himself. Not always, but sometimes. Still. If one is to be an educator, they really should Think a bit before yapping out conjecture. I agree.
NDT spewed nonsense in the opening paragraph of his book Cosmology for People in a Hurry:
βIn the beginning, nearly fourteen billion years ago, all the space and all the matter and all the energy of the known universe was contained in a volume less than one-trillionth the size of the period that ends this sentence.β
Now days one has to be especially careful to make sure the source of information is a good one. Everything can and is faked.
