Went to an event with Paul Hawken as speaker about his proposition "drawdown". he had nothing new to me on offer, but I really appreciated his repeated mention of the dangers to create otherness, between individuals as well as person & environment. we are all in this together, & the only way to heal our situation is one of inclusiveness - unconditional inclusion. thank you, @Rugglesby

Thanks for going along, good to get 1st hand feed back. Did you feel his "Proposition Drawdown" has anything to offer as far as reaching the broader community? We are somewhat fortunate here as this region is very aware.

i can tell you only what i know is possible from my own experience, & i do my damnedest to reduce my carbon footprint, which is basically behind everything Hawken proposes.

he states that industrialized agriculture is by far the biggest cause for the advance of climate change. i am a vegetarian, leaning towards veganism. so i know, this is possible, if not new to me.

also not new, but quite possible, is the reduction in private transport usage, & here it is not only about the miles we do in our individual cars, but the very fact that everyone has to own a car, when it takes so much in resources & energy to make a car that is only used 3-5% of the time. me? after returning from the west coast i hitchhiked the first three years. it was not comfortable, but possible.

the one thing that i really appreciated - without it being new to me - was his concern about the wording we use when it is about climate change; we speak about "mitigation actions" & "fight climate change", as though it's something removed from us as humanity, something alien with negativity all over it. Hawken's proposal here is to acknowledge connectivity & with it the responsibility to act. there is no separation - we are climate.

watch his speech too, same as the one he gave at the beachy.

ah, I didn't realise it was the same speech, I watched it the other night. hmmmm, what you say is true. I am setting up for the move to vegetarianism, I find vegan so hard. Perhaps communal ownership of vehicles is an option? If they were electric all the better, I am not a drinker, we have a lot of courtesy buses here but mainly to get people home after they ave had too many. I well understand the point how we distance ourselves from the issues, it is not "us" etc. Thanks for the feedback, more for me to ponder.

Unfortunately, I see the idea of "inclusiveness" as an impossibility. Our beyond excessive numbers and diversity have robbed many of a fair share of resources and the increased competition just to be able to survive has put "inclusiveness" at the bottom of the totem pole.

i agree, @JackPedigo, in which case humankind - & sadly thousands of other species - will probably not survive beyond 2040 or thereabouts.

Posted by JackPedigoI saw this today and even though it is a bit old it applies especially these days. It referenced the "boiling Frog Syndrome" which I have posted several times.

Posted by farmboy2017This is a one gallon olla used to irrigate garden plants. It works using capillary action. The vessel is porous and plant roots will wrap around it and drink from it!
