I'm new to this site. So, forgive me if this isn't the place for this comment. I'm Canadian and when the subject comes up in Canada; I have no problem letting people know I'm an atheist. But, when I'm in the USA or just speaking with an American I do not broach the subject. The only time I have is when the other person has made clear that they were atheists. I guess it's a bit of cowardice on my part but, most of the Americans I speak to are from the gun happy south and I don't want to be a victim of religious retribution from someone who turns out to be a fanatic. How should I overcome my fear or what some might call U.S gun rights bigotry?

Unless you run into a real nut job it's not very likely anyone would want or try to shoot you for being an atheist. It is far more likely someone might tell you that they will pray for you because they think you are going to hell. (Just grin and say "thank you." It confuses them.)
