I spent something like $600 on a 4hr "refresher course" it was an hour of backing and 3hrs behind the wheel with a trainer. Passed my test first try, got on board with a farmer for harvest season and transitioned to OTR with a flatbed in just a few months.
Obviously not the way to do it for everyone but just saying it is an option, never had an accident either however 2 cars hit me in Chicago on separate occasions. Good luck however you do it.

As far as company training goes, I think Prime has the best program (among the big carriers). Almost any company you go to for training will lock you into, at least, a 1 year contract. Steer clear od U.S. Carriers and Swift. Knight is one of the better companies to run for when starting out but I can't recommend their training program. Whereever you go, read you're contract thourouly or hire a lawyer to do it to. Make sure when you're hired you sign a w-4 and not a self-employment or contractor form.. If you want to become an owner operator, don't do lease-purchase from any of the big carrier (speaking from experience). Again, if you want to do a lease-purchase, read the contract throughly and do lots of research. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

I am lucky that l live near a community college that has a truck driving school, and it is well respected by the trucking companies. Everyone that graduates from there is swept up by them on graduation day. Literally, they're there in the parking lot on graduation day wanting to talk to you. I'm not saying all the company schools are bad, but they do have a reputation for pushing you through only to get your real training while on the road with your new partner.. If you can afford it, l would go with a private school with a good reputation, otherwise go with Aqhajumper's suggestions.

Schneider and Werner are good to start off with. Decent training with both.

I went with C1 Truck School. I spent 4 weeks in Fort Wayne, Indiana for school. They teach you how to pass your CDL. If you have time to do a 12 week course. That is best.

Swift and USA Trucking are easiest to get into but they kind of have a shitty reputation. You will get your foot in the door. I worked for Swift and after nine months on the job was able to get into JB Hunt, which is a step or two up. A little better pay but still not where I want to be. Good luck!
