Edinburgh University have been bullied by BLM into renaming Hume Tower because of David Hume's connection to the slave trade.
A petition got only 2000 names but the University went ahead anyway.
Totally wrong in my opinion
I have said before that after the statues come down, the records go next. Then there is no way to learn the lessons of the past. What is needed is what is suggested below, that plaques telling the full story should be attached to the statues. Surely this would satisfy every body?
Iām still seething from when I heard this news earlier! David Hume was the father of the Scottish Enlightenment, and this is an outrageous slur on his name. The University powers that be are lily-livered and supine! It is and always will be the Hume Tower to me.
Someone said here in Canada, it would be better to leave the statues, & erect a plaque explaining the history rather than trying to change it. We know how well that works.
@Lilac-JadeCanada You canāt alter the past or see and judge things that happened 300 years ago by using todayās more enlightened way of thinking and modern scientific knowledge.
@Marionville Exactly. I said something like that to my husband....we can only change our behaviours in the now. We should take the past as something to learn from, & change ourselves now accordingly.
