Do you think that Mrs May's mess has its roots in her Christian upbringing? Her father was a preacher and she preaches in speeches. She has red lines which could also be called 'Commandments' .
Allow me to paraphrase Steven Weinberg; "With or without religion you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
If you're arguing that Mrs May is a "good person doing evil things" then it's her inherent goodness that requires some further substantiation.
We are all products of our socialisation process, which can go some way to answer why she never seems able to interact deeply with human beings. The lady's not for 'understanding' should be her catchphrase.
Following her massive defeat on Brexit and close run thing on Confidence, She should have stepped down as PM. She has demonstrated that failure is always her main option. At last she seems to be attempting what should have been done at the start - involving all the other parties, but even then she still seems to be preaching and not listening. I hate to say it but, stupid woman!
Possibly. This is one of the reasons I distrust leaders who have a strong religious background.
If I were to play Devil's advocate, I would point out that these are uncharted waters, since there has not been an equivalent to a Brexit before (that I know of anyway.) Therefore, there is no precedent to draw from. It looks like it will be the UK that sets that precedent. I suspect other countries which have expressed similar desires will hold fire until they see what happens to us, and perhaps learn from any mistakes we make.
Perhaps, but it’s more likely just a personality trait,
Some of those traits are the qualities of a bigot . e.g the refusal to talk to other political parties until she had to.
I think Mrs May’s mess is the stitch up by Cameron leaving someone to clear up after he ran away from it.
Yes he started the present sequence of bad government but did not have the balls to correct it. Mrs May took on the poisoned baton but made her own unique mistakes.
@Mcflewster that’s what I thought. I have been in Australia for 12 years so everything Brexit is pretty much second hand and I have no idea what means what and all this talk of a backstop! I don’t get any of it to be honest?
@Geoffrey51 It is a plot by rich 'dealer' type politicians to make money out of uncertainty and negate the EUROPEAN COURT OF JUSTICE. ALSO hold in check people who cannot afford to deal. THIS theory has not yet fully emerged but something like this is probably TRUE.
@Mcflewster thanks, sounds true to form!
Cameron was certainly misguided in calling for a referendum. The Conservative party knew what they were getting when they voted May to fill Cameron's vacancy. It is debatable whether May knew what she was getting herself into, although it is said by some that she thinks she is doing her duty. All I can see is May putting herself first, her party second, and the wider community a poor third. She is unwilling to take a broad view. Like most religious people she does not believe that other viewpoints might just be valid, let alone have merit. So, in answer to Mcflewster's question, I think her attitude and actions are the result of a combination of her upbringing, "faith", and conviction in the rightness of her actions. Yes, she is a bloody difficult woman, without the charisma or intellectual pragmatism to get the UK out of this mess. The rest of the world is commenting on how sad it is to witness the rapid decline in influence that the UK has had in Europe and beyond.
