The law suggested by welsh MP against any lies made by MP s or other government employees seems a bit extreme and difficult to check. How about a device to get more transparency of statements ? The last election was greatly affected by refusals to be interviewed or explain reasons. Asking for reasonable explanations would affect the religious field of discussion too.
A reasonable and short explanation should either be included in the statement of politicians/government employees or available immediately on demand.
Any charge that depends on Mens Rea (knowing that what you're doing is wring) presents challenges when it comes to reasonable doubt. However we can and do enforce many of these laws. Misleading the house is already against the ministerial code and tends to result in the minister in question losing their portfolio. No reason why similar charges couldn't be conceived for misleading the public. Recently the government's actions were reversed because the court found that they mislead the Queen. In this case intent was not at issue. It's quite possible for there to be a lesser offense where intent cannot be proven yet the government official still has a duty of care to present accurate and impartial information.
I can’t see any such law working in practice. I think better scrutiny of candidates in the first place needs to be where to start.

Posted by MattHardyA Boris promise is just a lie that hasn't happened yet. Whatever Sue Grey says, no way is Boris going to admit he lied and resign.
