This may be a false memory but I think I recall, just wondering if anyone can confirm.
My dad was a member of the AA and had the yellow badge on the front of the car. Whenever an AA man saw the vehicle he saluted and I am sure I remember saluting back. This would have been early-mid 60s.
Can anyone remember if this was a real protocol of the AA?
Yes . I also had a private key to roadside telephone boxes.
Yes...that was true ...although I can’t say when it stopped being the protocol.
That was when AA men rode about on a bike and sidecar
Oh yes, they did didn’t they!
Yes it was. In 1958 I was 17 years old and visiting England with my mother. Our host, a businessman who owned a famous manufacturing business, drove us around in his Bentley, and I saw an AA man salute us. I asked why and it was explained.
Thanks, just checking that I wasn’t totally fantasising!
