Someone asked in another group what a UU worship service includes, so I’ll take a stab at it. The order of these items changes, and they may have different names. If you have other experiences, please share.

  1. Welcome and announcements—no surprises
  2. Chalice lighting —this is usually accompanied by a brief statement of unity of purpose
  3. Opening words/call to worship. This sets the tone for a safe soace for spiritual exploration.
  4. opening hymn —we have two hymnals, one more traditional than the other.
  5. Time for All Ages — Story with a message related to the sermon topic
  6. song to send the children to their classes
  7. Joys and Concerns / Meditation
  8. Reading — I’ve used readings from everyone from Buddha to Kermit the frog.
  9. Offeratory — Gotta collect money to keep the lights on. No thithes, just give $1-$5,
  10. second reading or musical piece
  11. sermon 15-20 mins.
  12. closing hymn
  13. benediction/ closing words
    Did I miss anything?

Pretty much what we do. We do have a music prelude, and a postlude after. If choir sings, then they do two songs, and will also have two hymns.

Yes! And I’m a choir singer — lax of me to forget the additional music. Thanks!

That's just about the scheme of things at my UU fellowship. Although # 11 (sermon) at my UU can be anything of interest to the general public. Such as, on nov. 25th I am doing the service featuring my wife's poetry and stories of her life little known by anybody except me. The music can be almost anything, for example we are setting 2 of my wife's poems to music and one will be sung as a congregational song.
