Excellent, and thank you for posting here! I attended UU's over about 10 yrs after a large 'new thought' group dissolved, and felt finally at home in a fellowship organization. Life situations have given me distance from that over recent years, and you are reminding me of all the value there - thank you!
I hope you enjoy the high desert of Bend, somewhere dear to me but not reachable this weekend. You wouldn't be looping near Portland soon, would you?? πŸ™‚

I joined one of the UU's in my city. It is good. The community is caring, intelligent, well educated, creative. They have celebrations that are family friendly, films, book discussion groups, volunteer work and all kinds of positive things.

Glad you found that community!

2 of my 3 children consider themselves UUers. My Math prof son never, from childhood on, had any use for any groups even the Society as it was called in York. I'm sort of embarrassed about going back. I didn't go as my ex attended, until about 3 years ago when they threw her out. (I know, that is impossible to get ousted from the UU, but she did - maybe she is back in, I don't know, but I doubt it after they had her arrested. I'll leave that mystery).

Any way, I always found going a positive experience, even when the speaker was boring. And, they had the best sex education classes for children and teens.

My congregation has booted out three members in 20 years. They were all acting abusively and being manipulative. The Board and ministers tried to work with all three but in time found them toxic to the community. Smart congregations have policies in place regarding right relationships and the steps to be taken when someone is causing harm.
