Ive spent the last summer at 8000 feet and elevation sickness is no joke. My best advice is drink lots of water, eat healthy and pay attention when your body tells you that you need rest.

I was in Cuzco, Peru some time ago. The local remedy was Coca Leaf tea. It was also part of the tea service in the hotel.
I was not affected as much as some others, but I found that 2 or 3 days relaxing at altitude was a great help.

Quito is not quite as high as Cuzco. You should be OK... Just take it easy until your body acclimates. on a separate note... You should visit Cuenca. It is lovely!

Galapagos might be better. Cuenca is much easier to get to! It has lots of history, culture and an incredible setting in the mountains. Cuenca also has some of the most diverse farmers markets I have ever seen. Think of peaches, apples and cherries displayed together with mangoes, bananas and passion fruit...all locally grown. Add to it some uniquely Andean fruits and you have an unequaled variety of tastes and textures.

@Soarfeet
You have to try a "Guaba" . Imagine a bean or a pea pod except it is three feet long and the beans are the size of a charcoal briquette and look like polished oak. You toss the beans and eat the white pulp surrounding them. The pulp tastes like cacao.

Ypu also need to try a naranjilla. It is a bit like a passion fruit, with an egg-shell-like skin and a pulpy mass in the middle. The taste is reminiscent of an orange...except much better.

@Soarfeet I never thought of retiring there...but I enjoyed visiting Cuenca. When do you travel to Ecuador?

No way around it, you need the extra red blood cells to get more of that thinner oxygen to your muscles and brain. I'm going to have the same problem, I'm going to see my cousin in Boulder CO next month. I live at sea level and I'm not in especially good fitness after some heart trouble. Ive already postponed the trip for over a year hoping to get much fitter, but now I'm resigned to not being able to do much that I had planned. The best I can do is keep exercising, then spend my first 4-5 days there resting, maybe camping at an easily accessible high altitude, then see how I get on. Good luck with Ecuador, it looks beautiful 🙂

@Soarfeet my problem is that what I'm used to doing when I visit a new place is hiking up and down all the biggest hills. That's obviously not going to happen any more haha - it'll be a learning experience finding my new limits 🙂

you need to spend time at high altitudes to increase your red blood cell count

Train at high altitudes before you go on your trip.

@Soarfeet Sorry. I don't know of a magical pill.
