I go to Dakar, Senegal in West Africa every winter for a couple months. It's lovely, warm but not too hot, has beautiful beaches, and the people are super friendly and French speaking. Only a 7.5 hour flight from New York or D.C. I highly recommend it and would be happy to answer any questions about it.

I rent a studio apartment in Dakar, usually costing between 750 and 800 USD per month. Airbnb has some places there and some french websites like Ma Maison. Hotels can range from super luxurious expat places, which cost as much as fancy hotels here, to clean and safe but a little shabby for 50 to 60 USD per night. Food and everything else is super cheap there. Dakar is a big city but has beaches. For a quieter beach area go to Ziguinchor in the south of Senegal. Again, a range of prices depending on whether you want American style or less deluxe.
