Miriam Makeba was the first African singer who could genuinely be called an international artist after she emerged in the 1960s as a civil rights activist in South Africa who used her music to publicise the campaign against apartheid. She toured the west and became a familiar and popular figure on TV in America, U.K. & Europe, becoming a Grammy award winning artist.
