Probably best known for his “Bolero”, which reflected his Spanish heritage on his mother’s side, French composer Maurice Ravel was born one hundred and fifty years ago in 1875 in the Basque region of France, only 19 kilometres from the Spanish border.
He was clearly affected by the distress of war and its toll on people he knew and loved during WW1, and in 1917 wrote “Le Tombeau de Couperin” each six movements of which representing a close friend whom he’d lost. This excerpt from the above is from a concert in the Palais de Versailles, Paris in 1997, performed by the Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim.
