Westworld on dvd. Love me some Thandie Newton. The show is, of course, a variation on a theme that has been with us quite a while, going back at least to Frankenstein, maybe to the golem or further: If man creates a being in his own image, thus taking on a prerogative that is god’s and god’s alone, he does so at his own great peril. But why now? Well, why then? There seems to have been a notion in the European zeitgeist when Mary Shelley was living, and modern science was still fairly young, that men were trying to go to places where men ought not to go. Now? Well, shit. Looks as if that notion had some truth to it, not in terms of science per se, but technology and the “white man’s burden” to rape the planet. And I guess there’s some anxiety these days about AI.

There have always been concerns about advances that may equalize the poor with the richer , in some way . How can they be , "better than ," the rest of society , if the rest of society can have the same things . Yet , if , in the States , the general population , is better off than the well to do of a century ago used to be , aren't they privy to a much improved level of living ? Think on it . A century ago , only the rich had indoor plumbing with hot and cold running water , electricity , a telephone , and a car . These days , other than the homeless , that's pretty much standard issue .

Yes, but we take it all for granted that we should all have it, and in my world we should all have it even the homeless should be able to go somewhere to wash, to get something to eat, to see a doctor, etc, etc.

Posted by ReignmondI read this back in 2018. Absolutely loved it. It is an oddly small sized book, so it is good to travel with. [amazon.com]
