I recently managed to get hold of a book I read many years ago, and was more than a little shocked by it. I have for many years been a fan of British horror writer Graham Masterton and have collected almost all of his books bar one. In 1980 under the...

Are there any other fans of Kate Atkinson here? I ask not just because I think she's a brilliant novelist, but because she often mentions, seemingly in passing, that one or another of her characters is an atheist, and it seems to me that they are ...

The non-fiction in this group is hard to find. If you are as committed to non-fiction as I am, please post it in this thread. I will add to the thread with Robert MacFarland’s Underland.

Reading The Age of Skin by Dubravka Ugresic, a Croatian essayist now living in Amsterdam. One line struck me. After a description of ex-Yugoslavia as a place of ruin and brutalist kitsch, she says to imagine the best-known museums in Paris, London,...

I'm currently reading "The Power Worshippers" by Katherine Stewart. Is anyone else reading this? Seems like a great non-fiction book to discuss here with its meaty contents. I'm only a few hours into it, but I've just got to share that this book ...

The Town and the City. Published the year one “John” Kerouac—the name it appeared —was twenty-eight, seven years before On the Road made him famous. You could compare it to Mailer's The Naked and the Dead. With both books, it is ...

Marilynne Robinson's Jack hits close to the bone, maybe even too close. Don't know that one has found one's Della. Don't know that one ever will. Robinson's a rather cogent thinker for a Christian. But there is the rub. I may well read her other ...

This is one of my very most favorite books. In fact, I even bought a hard copy after listening to the audiobook so I could go over it in more detail. I have studied evolution for awhile, and even taught it some, but this book united some thoughts I ...

I read this back in about 1983. Phenomenal book! Chapters alternate between a Sci-Fi story of an Ark spaceship and the problems that occur on their journey, and the earth-bound science behind the problem.

Looking again at this book reminds me that I wanted to re-listen to it again. It is that good and instructive of our Nation's procedural institutions. The author's engaging dialogue is highlight of what ordinarily a dull subject.

A short Sci-Fi that is quite good even though it will only take about an hour to read. It is also kinda cheap.

I read this back in 2018. Absolutely loved it. It is an oddly small sized book, so it is good to travel with.

I enjoyed "The Dictionary of Lost Words", a historical fiction about the creating of the Oxford-English Dictionary and the fight for women's suffrage in the UK.
