A while back I posted pics of woodcock eggs in a nest. I had accidentally spooked the parent who was brooding the eggs and it flew off. I returned a few days later to see if an adult was still attending to the nest (this time with my good camera and long lens) and was happy to see one of the adults on the nest, sitting tightly.

This morning I read a piece about the importance of keeping distance from animals, as, research, has shown, just human presence can change animal, behavior. the article suggested exactly hat you did, use a long lens.
