Tell us more about working for Jim Hensen. What’s it all about?
I was a staff artist at Walt Disney World in Orlando for 9 years, and later freelanced in the area for other theme parks, museums, attractions, etc. When I was at Disney, Henson built a show in the Disney park. The Zoot figure had been started by senior Disney sculptor, Perry Russ but when Henson asked for further modifications, Perry was busy with other responsibilities and handed it to me to finish. It was the only Henson figure I ever worked on. I never met Jim Henson but his people that I interfaced with were the very nicest people I ever worked for.
Neat! How big was he?
About 18 or 20 inches tall as I recall. (it was a long time ago)
Did you finish him or did the passing of Mr. Henson bring an end to the project?
@DotLewis In that industry a lot of the work is compartmentalized into specialties. My specialties were sculpting, moldmaking, and mechanical animation. Other folks did figure-finishing, which included painting, flocking, fur&feather, and costuming. On the Tigger figure I was able to get a photo of the finished piece because our own finishers did it in the same shop, but Zoot was a joint project with Henson, so it was shipped back to their people for finishing, and I never even saw it myself.
