Language matters because we think, reason, and express ourselves through language. You are not thinking as clearly as you are able, if you are tripping over sentence structure or have a very limited vocabulary. Standard definitions are also essential since without commonly agree to definitions, communication between two people is extremely difficult. More often than not, the two individuals start talking past each other because a statement made by one produces a mental concept in the other that differs significantly from what was intended.
In my opinion, everyone should seek to improve their language skills continuously throughout their lifetimes. If you disagree with this statement and IF you hold an adamantly different opinion, that’s OK – just don’t expect me to engage you for very long. In contrast, if you appreciate the significance of language but are a work in progess, then I’ll patiently carry on discussions with you.
I appreciate this viewpoint quite a bit. I agree with it completely. When I am struggling to find words to make a point I want to make, I am immediately cognizant of a lack in my knowledge of the subject.
