Response to this article.. Scandinavian countries have actually gradually been moving towards more privatized systems in healthcare, public transportation, security and other sectors because of poor results under government management. Some Swedish towns actually pay private security companies to secure their areas because Swedish police are not doing the job. Increasing numbers of Swedes are opting for private health insurance. A number of Swedish companies have relocated to the US and UK and slashed thousands of jobs in Sweden to continue surviving, while Swedish tech companies like Spotify have bleak futures because they are burdened with paying off massive government loans. Diminished government involvement in business allows businesses to thrive - this is one of the reasons why there have been calls to leave the EU. If anything, socialism is diminishing in Scandinavia, while capitalism is prospering. - Lauren Ell

I just don’t get the rationale behind the ones pushing socialism here. Its never worked. And nothing is free. Whatever is free to you was paid for in some way by someone else.

Swedes pay one of the highest tax rates in the world yet their public sectors, such as healthcare and education, have been performing worse over the years. Sweden's school system rates only a couple notches higher than US's school system.

Interesting article. Having worked extensively in Holland, Switzerland, and Germany in the past; I've heard from both sides of the State/Socialist models citizens. Holland, while I was there from 1998 through 2006, was already starting to experience the stirrings of thoughts to move more towards capitalism. A good example was the BaaN Software company. Interestingly enough, to me at least, was the attitude of the Dutch professionals who spent time working and living in the USA. They were much more open and positive about private medical insurance and less government control of business.

I have been living in Sweden for nearly three years, and also lived in Sweden 12 years ago as a foreign exchange student, and I do not think the Nordic "socialist" system is up to par with Americans' utopia vision. It is really interesting to live here and see its faults up front. What I pay attention to is the quality of the system, which has become worse over the years, from healthcare to education to security. It shows how critical capitalism is for the survival of socialistic policies.
